Frequently asked questions
When should a woman see a doctor for fertility treatment in Kolkata?
See a specialist if you have been trying for 12 months without success, or after 6 months if you are 35 or older. Come sooner if you have irregular or absent periods, PCOD, known endometriosis, past pelvic surgery or more than one miscarriage.
Can PCOD be treated without IVF?
Yes, in many women. Weight management, medicines to regulate cycles and ovulation induction with folliculometry monitoring help a large number of women with PCOD conceive. IVF is considered only if these steps do not work or other factors are present.
What tests are done for female infertility?
Usually hormone blood tests (including AMH, thyroid and prolactin), a transvaginal scan to check the uterus and ovaries, and a tubal test such as sonosalpingography. Hysteroscopy is advised only if a problem inside the uterus is suspected.
Does age affect female fertility?
Yes. Egg numbers and quality fall gradually with age, more noticeably after 35. An AMH test and antral follicle count give a useful picture of your ovarian reserve and help Dr. Rath decide how quickly to move to treatment.
Is fertility treatment painful?
Most of it is not. Scans and IUI cause mild discomfort at most. Procedures such as ovum pickup and hysteroscopy are done under light sedation or anaesthesia, and Dr. Rath explains each step beforehand.
